Saint-Emilion is a major winegrowing region inside the Bordeaux area. The area of investigation, including some famous neighbouring appellations like Pomerol, covers approximately 10,000 ha. It is well known that soil and climate are major drivers of wine quality. Hence, it is of utmost importance to assess local environmental conditions for the grapevine.The recording of local temperatures, and the spatialization of these data based on spatial models integrating the effect of environmental factors, will yield temperature maps at a comparable scale to the already existing soil data. When these maps are coupled to climate change models, projections for future local climatic condition can be carried out. The density of temperature sensors throughout the area is approximately one sensor for 150ha. For a small sector (approximately 15 ha), 30 temperature sensors are located in an area of 15ha. Hence, the instrumentation of the area will allow taking into account scale issues. Simultaneously to the temperature recording, vine phenology (flowering, veraison, grape ripening) will be monitored. This will allow testing the performance of phenological models for the grapevine, like the GFV model (Parker et al., 2011) at a local scale. Expected results include refined temperature maps for one of the major wine growing areas of the Bordeaux region, establishment of a hierarchy of environmental factors driving local temperature differences, as well as the assessment of the impact of temperature on vine phenology and grape ripening. When the GFV model will be validated at the local scale, precise spatial projections for most appropriate varieties to local conditions can be made under future climatic conditions.
