The University of Geisenheim (UGM) has recently (January 2013) been founded by the former Research Centre Geisenheim and one branch faculty of the HSRM (University of Applied Sciences). Before and since then the UGM provides excellent research and teaching in the areas of viticulture, horticulture and beverage technology. It aims at bridging basic and applied sciences thus bringing basic research into application in the field for the benefit of consumers, growers, advisors and public administration. The UGM currently employs a staff of about 370 people, including scientists, technical and administrative personal. The UGM is financed by the Hessian State Ministry for Science and Art. Approximately 1000 students are supervised in lectures and practical courses in the field of viticulture and enology, beverage research, horticulture and landscape architecture. One of the major interests in climate change research at the UGM is to assess possible impacts for viticulture and horticulture and to develop adequate adaptation strategies. The UGM possesses expertise in the whole process of impact model development, simulations by means of ensembles of climate model data and representing results to the scientific community as well as to stakeholders. Current projects focus on modeling phenology, valuable ingredients and water budget. Future tasks in developing impact models aim to incorporate different aspects of grapevine physiology, to identify vulnerabilities caused by special conditions of weather and plant development. Furthermore the UGM is currently developing the first FACE (Free Air CO2 Enrichment) facility for viticulture worldwide. A well-established connection to the industry within the region will be beneficial accessing different sides, slopes or training systems over a wide range of different meso-climate. In addition the UGM has access to a total of 24ha own experimental vineyards and the entire production chain from field to the final product are available.
