Plumpton College

Plumpton College is at the centre of the UK wine industry, offering wine-related courses in Wine Business and Viticulture & Oenology from apprenticeships through to undergraduate degree (BA and BSc) level. From 2014 we shall also be offering a Masters Degree course in Viticulture & Oenology. Plumpton also delivers industry-level training throughout the UK, and is developing a sustainability scheme and a very informative website through the WineSkills project (see ). It also benefits from strong industry links through membership and active participation of the United Kingdom Vineyards Association (UKVA) and the South East Vineyards Association (SEVA). To complement our excellent winery, teaching, tasting and laboratory facilities, we will be opening the new UK Wine Research Centre in september 2013 in order to provide an industry-focussed research capability. One of our key teaching and research areas is the effect of climate and weather on viticulture in cool-climate regions : our undergraduate courses have modules that look at the relationship between climate change and vineyard establishment, wine styles, terroir and sustainable wine production. We will also have a dedicated module on climate change and terroir in our new Masters course. Currently, Alistair Nesbitt, a member of the Wine Department Team, is undertaking a PhD in climate change and wine production at the University of East Anglia (UEA), investigating the potential impacts of climate change on wine production in the UK and abroad. Alistair is able to draw on UEA’s climate expertise and benefits from using state-of-the-art modelling tools. In addition, we have also been very active partners in the E-VitiClimate project (see, managing and delivering 2 modules for this on-line interactive learning portal, designed to educate students and producers about climate change, wine production, mitigation and adaptation techniques.
